PlayStation announced its partnership with the gaming-focused chat software Discord. PS is also acquiring a minority stake in the company. Wait there, didn’t we hear that Microsoft is actually in talks to buy Discord for $10 billion? Yes, that piece of news made a lot of headlines. While Microsoft is showing buying interest, did Sony rushed and made an announcement?
PlayStation has announced its decision and acquired a minority stake in the chat software as a way to build a relationship between Discord and Sony.
Jim Ryan, President & CEO of PlayStation, announced the partnership in an official blog post. It disclosed that Sony Interactive Entertainment had made a minority investment as part of Discord’s Series H round. Jim has spoken with Discord co-founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy and inspired by their lifelong love for gaming. They had a conversion on ways to bring friends and communities together.
“Empowering players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences is at the heart of what we do, so we are beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world’s most popular communication services.”
How big is Discord now?
Discord is an online chat tool and community software where people can create channels together to text, voice, and video chat. Discord has reported over 140 million users per month around the globe. For such a massively growing service, it is quite apparent that most of the companies are in the talks to acquire it, including Microsoft. However, instead of slow talks, Sony directly announced its partnership, and it made an investment through the H round. As initially, Microsoft was ready to offer $10 billion, those negotiations have been put on hold with the potential to be “rekindled in the future.”
