Sony has announced the initiation of cloud streaming testing for “supported PS5 games.” Nick Maguire, VP of Global Services, Global Sales, and Business Ops at Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), shared the news in a recent PlayStation Blog post. The ultimate goal for Sony is to offer this feature as an additional benefit to subscribers of the Premium tier of PlayStation Plus.
The testing phase includes various categories of supported PS5 games, such as PS5 titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Game Trials, as well as digital PS5 titles owned by players. Once launched, users will be able to utilize cloud game streaming for supported PS5 games directly on their PS5 consoles. This feature will be particularly advantageous for Premium members, eliminating the need to download games onto their consoles before playing.
Interestingly, this announcement coincides with PlayStation’s existing involvement in cloud gaming. Previously, the company provided cloud gaming through PlayStation Now, which later merged with PS Plus to form the current version of PlayStation Plus. Additionally, Sony introduced “Project Q,” a handheld device enabling users to play games installed on their PS5 consoles via a Wi-Fi connection.
Sony has expressed reservations about cloud gaming in comparison to industry giant Microsoft. The latter is actively pursuing the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, a move cautioned against by Sony’s CEO, Kenichiro Yoshida. Yoshida believes that cloud gaming remains technically challenging, a sentiment shared by Sony. The UK’s Competition Markets Authority (CMA) recently blocked Microsoft’s acquisition due to concerns about potential exclusivity of Activision Blizzard games on Xbox Cloud Gaming. Microsoft’s appeal faces further resistance from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which obtained a temporary block on the deal through a US federal judge.
Sony’s venture into cloud streaming for supported PS5 games demonstrates the company’s commitment to enhancing the gaming experience for users. As testing progresses, players can anticipate seamless access to their favorite games directly from their consoles, paving the way for a more convenient and immersive gaming future.
