Steam Deck is an excellent idea brought into reality by Valve. The mini gaming PC did get a lot of praise from its store rival Epic games and even the Xbox CEOs. When there features were revealed, everyone was so excited. Now with a confirmation on the Steam Deck performance when docked gives a little bad news. The one and only competitor that the Steam Deck should overcome is the Nintendo Switch. Valve Steam Deck designer has confirmed that the Deck will not get a performance boost when docked.
The designer of the Steam Deck mentions that this move has been taken into consideration just because of the design target. The main aim of the Steam Deck is to be used as mobile then docked with a console. During taking the decisions of the features, they thought of the highest use case that is mobile. In an interview with PC Gamer, Greg Coomer has answered all these questions related to the performance boost. This doesn’t mean that the Steam Deck will not support high-resolution monitors.
Recently we got to know about the 30 FPS target from another designer Pierre Loup Griffais. He mentions that from their tests, that is the floor of what they have considered playable. He also says there will be internal options to change the FPS limit. This 30 FPS is limited to the 800p screen present with the console and might vary with external monitors.
Well, we get to know that there will be no performance boost of Steam Deck when docked. This would also make the AMD APU Zen 2c that can clock up to 3.5Ghz suffer. The eight computes of the RDNA 2 GPU up to 1.6GHz are also relatively slower than the present GPU’s built on the same architecture. When the form factor is taken into consideration, then Valve has made a good decision. But the performance of this handheld gaming device depends on a lot of factors. The temperature while gaming and the APU are the two most important factors among them. However, the software used in the Deck, being Linux and open source, might allow you to overclock the device for extra performance.
