Apple Event highlights - iPhone 12 series - A big jump?

Source: Apple Event

Apple made a fabulous recorded event video. It’s all about Apple yesterday. After a month from the iPad and Apple Watch announcements, it came up with a new Apple event that unveiled the iPhone 12 lineup. Actually, they’ve introduced a new Homepod mini too in the event. But this article mainly concentrates on iPhone 12 series and their changes from the previous-gen iPhone 11. So, Let’s go through.

The iPhone 12 line-up

This time, the iPhone 12 series got 4 variants to choose from depending on budget. That includes an iPhone 12 mini this year.

  1. iPhone mini
  2. iPhone 12
  3. iPhone 12 Pro
  4. iPhone 12 Pro Max

Prices based on different variants and storage options are displayed at the end of the article.

Display

The iPhone 12 Mini comes with a 5.4-inch display. iPhone 12 and iPhone Pro has the same screen with 6.1-inch in size. Whereas, the iPhone 12 Pro Max has the biggest 6.7-inch display. All are Super Retina XDR OLED displays with a higher resolution of 2532 x 1170 and with 460ppi. Well no 120Hz or 90Hz refresh rate and also have to see that notch again. So this is not a big jump but that resolution and brightness make a good sense.

Design

They flattened the iPhone body even more now. The bezels are less and the sides are completely flat with an aluminum frame around it. iPhone Pro and Pro Max have a Stainless Steel frame all around it. Above all, it has a ceramic shield on display. They mentioned 4 times better drop protection. They also have improved IP68 water and dust resistance.

The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 are available in Black, White, (Product) Red, Green, and Blue. Whereas iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max comes in 4 finishes such as Elegant Silver, Graphite, Gold, and Pacific Blue.

Battery

iPhone 12 mini can last up to 15hrs and iPhone 12 can give a 17hrs of video playback. Whereas iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max can deliver 20hrs of video playback. Which is the longest battery backup of all the iPhones.

A14 Bionic Chip

Source: Apple Event

This masterpiece was first seen on iPad air a month ago. That’s just a glimpse of how powerful it is. Now, it is in all the variants of the iPhone 12 series. 5nm process, most powerful 16-core Neural Engine, 6-core CPU, 4-core GPU, and many powerful custom technologies make it the most powerful smartphone processor ever produced. However, A13 Bionic Chip is still the best out there and it’s A14 here. This drives most expectations on computation power and extreme efficiency. I call it a big jump as it makes the iPhone 12 a future proof. We’ve made an in-depth article on the A14 Bionic Chip. Consider reading it for more information.

On the other hand, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are having a triple 12-megapixel camera setup on the rear. Features wide (f/1.6), ultra-wide (f/2.4), and telephoto (f/2.0 on Pro and f/2.2 on Pro Max) lens. These include a LiDAR scanner for better auto-fucus, they claim it focuses 6 times faster in the night mode.

All the iPhone variants have the same 12-megapixel f/2.2 front cameras.

Literally, 12 is every where. Because its iPhone 12??? Well, I don’t know.

5G

Finally, 5G is here in all the iPhone 12 series. They started the iPhone 12’s introduction with 5G. Even their event invitation reads “Hi, Speed”. Most of the smartphones launched in 2020 are featuring 5G making it a feature ready phone and the iPhone entered that now. It is a big jump. They had also mentioned some 5G centric features like Smart Data mode which uses the 5G band when it’s needed and switch to LTE when it’s not needed. The peak download speeds can go up to 3.5Gbps in ideal conditions. Also, they partnered with some big 5G providers like Verizon to give the best 5G experience for their consumers. Hans Vestberg, Chairman and CEO of Verizon also took the stage for a few minutes in the event.

MagSafe

Source: Apple Newsroom

MagSafe is what they called it. They reduced the wireless charger usage issues with their MagSafe wireless chargers. They attach to the correct position on the iPhone’s back which charges efficiently. MagSafe wireless charging can go up to 15W whereas Qi wireless charging does it at 7.5W. They also introduced some MagSafe compatible back cases and MagSafe wallets.

Environmental features

Apple plans to have a net-zero climate impact across their entire business by 2030. They build iPhone 12 removing harmful chemicals and using renewable and recyclable materials. Apple used 100% rare earth elements in all the magnets including camera, haptics, and MagSafe.

Apple believes that customers already have over 700 million Lightning headphones and over 2 billion Apple power adapters out in the world. So they are removing these items from the iPhone box. That reduces carbon emission and also reduces the size of the iPhone box.

Considering all the things together, they said they can cut over 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually. As a huge company like that, with a user base of millions of consumers, this initiative can possibly make a big change. A big thanks to Apple for doing this and also a big thanks to consumers for being okay with missing accessories.
