An exclusive report from DoNews cited Oppo insiders who claimed that OnePlus and Oppo had merged their research and development departments. Also, they added, the new recruitments to the R&D are handled by Oppo and not OnePlus.
The merge reportedly happened in December but hasn’t officially stamped until recently. “It’s similar to the relationship between Xiaomi and Redmi, sharing the same R&D system,” quoted by the Oppo insider.
OnePlus said in an emailed statement to Android Authority that it’s in the process of further integrating some R&D capabilities within OPLUS, its long-term investor.

OnePlus and Oppo always share some hardware design aesthetics. Look how similar the Oneplus 8 Pro and Oppo Find X2 Pro. This merge will boost the similarity even more but only for the hardware. The difference between OnePlus and OPPO products has always been the software, and they will remain distinct.
The merge is likely a good move. The major investor OPLUS will get beneficial as the merge will decrease the resource use. Also, the ideas from both teams will help the brands grow faster. Realme having the same major investor, OPLUS, is likely to benefit from this merger as well.
Although the hardware may look alike, the software will be distinct as software R&D teams will remain separate.
