The first look at the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 foldable has been leaked, intensifying the anticipation for Samsung’s expected launch event in July. It is expected that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature more upgrades compared to other foldable devices to be announced this year, with the highlight being a larger outer display. The tiny external display, which has been a staple on Samsung’s flip phones since the first Galaxy Z Flip model in 2020, is anticipated to be replaced by this larger outer display.
The leaked image, shared by tipster Revegnus (@Tech_Reve), showcases the clamshell foldable device enclosed in a boxy-looking protective case typically used for concealing smartphone designs during testing. Despite the case, it is evident that the device inside is the Galaxy Z Flip 5, which has been subject to multiple leaks in recent months.
While the case manages to conceal the overall design of the device, there are openings for the cameras, buttons, and hinge. Notably, the top cover features a large cutout that unveils the new outer display. The image shows the larger outer display in standby or always-on display mode, showcasing the time with a clock. The sizable cutout confirms that the display has a large touch-friendly surface, a notable improvement over the outgoing Galaxy Z Flip 4 model. However, it does not appear to be as large as the outer display of the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, which incorporates rear cameras.
Furthermore, the leaked image confirms the presence of a new gapless flat folding design, made possible by the revamped hinge mechanism. Previous models were unable to achieve a seamless, gapless look due to the old hinge design. The new Galaxy Z Flip 5 is expected to have a hinge that allows both halves of the foldable device to sit flat against each other, providing a cleaner appearance and preventing dust and debris from settling on the inner folding display.
The announcement of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is expected to coincide with the unveiling of the larger Galaxy Z Fold 5 model at a launch event in Seoul, Korea. According to recent reports, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature a 6.7-inch full-HD+ AMOLED primary display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The upgraded outer AMOLED display is anticipated to have an always-on capability, similar to the iPhone 14 Pro models, and measure 3.4 inches diagonally with an HD resolution.
The phone is rumored to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and equipped with 8 GB of RAM. It is expected to be available in 128GB and 256GB storage variants. The rear camera setup is likely to consist of two 12-megapixel cameras with minor changes compared to the previous model, while a 3,700mAh battery with 25W wired charging support is anticipated.
