Samsung has launched the Galaxy Z Flip 5, featuring a larger 3.4-inch cover screen compared to its predecessor’s 1.9-inch display. The phone boasts a new flat-closing hinge design, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset customized for Samsung, and a 256GB storage option, all at a $999 price point. This puts it in direct competition with Motorola’s Razr Plus, also priced at $999 with 256GB storage. However, Samsung’s expertise in foldable phones and the hardware upgrades in the Z Flip 5 make it a strong contender, potentially putting the Razr Plus in a challenging position.
The Z Flip 5’s 6.7-inch 1080p OLED inner screen remains unchanged, while the outer 720p OLED screen is rebranded as the “Flex Display,” covering most of the phone’s front panel, except for the camera cutouts. Unlike Motorola’s Razr Plus, which has a slightly larger 3.6-inch front screen flowing around the cameras, the Z Flip 5’s new “teardrop”-style hinge closes flat, solving a persistent issue with previous models. Samsung claims this new hinge design is more durable and better equipped to handle impacts from drops.
In terms of water resistance, the Flip 5 retains its IPX8 rating, offering protection against full water immersion up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. On the other hand, the Razr Plus only has an IP52 rating, making it splash-resistant but not as protected as the Flip 5. Dust resistance is essential for folding phones, and while Samsung doesn’t claim an official dust resistance level, it incorporates measures to minimize the risk of dust intrusion.
The cover screen of both the Flip 5 and the Razr Plus supports small-screen-friendly widgets and full apps. Samsung allows running full apps, though it is located within the Good Lock app. The new cover screen also features a full-size keyboard, enabling users to respond to texts conveniently, unlike the limited prewritten responses on the previous Flip 4.
The specifications of the Flip 5 remain consistent with its predecessor, including a 3,700mAh battery, 25W wired and 15W wireless charging, 8GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel f/1.8 main rear camera with optical image stabilization, a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 10-megapixel selfie camera on the inner display. With its technological advantages and experience in folding phones, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 poses a significant challenge to the Motorola Razr Plus, which lags in water resistance and chipset technology. Motorola may need to adjust its pricing strategy to attract potential flip phone buyers in the face of strong competition from Samsung.
Preorders for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 have begun, and the phone will be available in mint, graphite, cream, and lavender from August 11th. Samsung.com offers additional exclusive color options, including blue, gray, green, and yellow.
