Disney to shut down Ice Age production company Blue Sky studios

Disney has decided to shut down the Ice Age production company Blue Sky Studios. This Oscar-winning animation production studio will be closed in April.

Disney has Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios already on the book. So it says it cannot afford a third internal animation studio.

The Blue Sky studio, owned by 20th Century Fox, a Disney acquisition, has 450 employees working in it. And this move would likely impact them.

According to the Deadline report,  Disney, which acquired Blue Sky as part of the more extensive acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, has decided to close the studio, with 450 employees losing their jobs at the studio due to the closure. However, Disney is working with those 450 employees to find new positions at Disney’s other internal animation studios.

“Given the current economic realities, after much consideration and evaluation, we have made the difficult decision to close filmmaking operations at Blue Sky Studios,” a Disney spokesperson said.

Blue Sky worked on 13 movies over the years, but its Ice Age series brought it massive fame. The company also released Bunny, the Oscar-winning short film, in 1998.

Blue Sky’s IP will remain with Disney, and also Disney still plans to go forward with the release of Blue Sky’s Ice Age TV series for Disney+.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is the Blue Sky studio’s most successful movie ever. It made $886 million worldwide back in 2009.
