Disney has decided on its upcoming slate of movies in 2021. These movies from Disney will be released in theaters, and only after that will these movies be coming to Disney Plus. This decision is taken by the tremendous response from the five out of the top eight releases this year. After the coronavirus pandemic, theaters have been opening slowly.
Disney’s decision to release the movies in theaters has got some strong reasons. Their recent releases in the theaters have got a very good response. Shang-Chi has got a record collection during the labor day weekend is the second most after the lockdown. Free Guy, on the other hand, has also got a decent collection at the theaters. After seeing both the films surpassing $100 million, they went back to the drawing board to change the plans.
At present, the upcoming releases from Disney are:
- The Last Duel – October 15th.
- Ron’s Gone Wrong – October 22nd.
- Eternals – November 5th.
- West Side Story – December 10th.
- The King’s Man – December 22nd.
All these dates are subject to change with the ongoing conditions arising due to COVID-19. These movies will have a 45-day release window. This means the movies will be in theaters for 45 days and might release the movie in their Disney Plus platform.
At present, Disney is facing a lawsuit from Johansson for the Black Widow release. Black Widow was the first Marvel movie after the pandemic to come to the theaters. This movie was released on Disney Plus on the same day it is out in the theaters. The actress’s salary was based on the collection of the movie from the theaters. The movie managed to collect only $80 million from theaters and $80 million from the Disney Plus app in the opening weekend. This lawsuit has made them change their mind about the release of the Shang-Chi movie.
