The craze of the Squid Game had gone so crazy that an Internet Provider had to sue Netflix for that. A Broadband provider in South Korea named SK Broadband sued Netflix for this craze. The network traffic and maintenance have seen a surge of viewers that has been costing them. Seoul court also asked Netflix to give something reasonable to the internet provider.
South Korean lawmakers stated that content providers are not paying for network usage despite explosive traffic. Because of this traffic, Netflix has underscored to become the companies second largest data traffic generator. Other streaming services such as Prime, Apple, and Facebook are paying for these charges, unlike YouTube which is the top traffic generator.
According to SK Broadband, the traffic jumped 24 times from May 2018 to 1.2 trillion bits of data per second. SK Broadband had to raise a lawsuit since Netflix has been using a dedicated line since 2018 to deliver high-definition video to the users. SK demands a total of KRW 27.2 billion (nearly Rs. 170 crores) in 2020 alone for the network usage fee.
The Seoul Central District Court said in a statement that it is reasonable for Netflix to provide something in return for the service provided by the broadband service provider. Netflix on the other hand in the US is paying a fee to one of the broadband providers for faster streaming speeds. In South Korea, the major traffic driving platforms Youtube and Netflix not paying the fee to the broadband services are increasing their maintenance. Netflix in response to this ruling has appealed against it with fresh preceding to start in December.
