Netflix today launched a new feature called “Downloads for You.” This new Netflix feature will download recommended TV shows and movies for you based on your tastes. Netflix started rolling this out for Android globally, and it will test the feature soon on iOS.
It is the user’s choice to turn on or off this feature, and it is also customizable. After turning on the feature, you can select the amount of storage space that your automatic downloads can utilize: either 1GB, 3GB, or 5GB. The downloads will take place when the next time you connect to a Wi-Fi network. It will download the content that it thinks you like, as it collects your interests from your Netflix watch history.
You can also cast the downloaded content to a nearby TV, and it will stream directly from your phone.
After you’ve watched the episodes or movies, you can delete them from the device to free up more storage space for the next time you connected to WiFi.
This feature is not a replacement for the already existing “Smart Downloads,” which just downloads the up next episode for you and deleting the watched ones.
Netflix has tested Downloads for You in late 2020 and launching the update now for Android devices. The same feature is in the works and will be out for iOS later this year.
However, it’s an exceptional feature for those who travel a lot and also for those whose connection is often unreliable. It will automatically download, and the content will be available offline for you whenever you need it.
“We’re excited to introduce Downloads for You. People who choose this new feature will have shows or movies automatically downloaded to their devices, with recommendations based on their tastes,” said Patrick Flemming, Netflix’s Director of Product Innovation, in a statement. “We want to make discovering your next new favorite series or film even easier, whether you’re connected or not.”
