According to The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and Variety, Warner Bros. will cancel Ava DuVernay’s New Gods and James Wan’s The Trench. The two films are set to explore two of the more unusual parts of the DCEU. New Gods, which is to be directed by DuVernay with a script she co-wrote with comic book writer Tom King. The movie will take us on the villain Darkseid alongside Mister Miracle, Big Barda, Granny Goodness, and HighFather. All these characters are the new gods from the planet New Genesis.
Trench is the movie that should have the Aquaman director James Wan as the producer of this film. The writers of the movie are Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald. This movie’s focus was to be a horror of the Trench Kingdom that featured in Aquaman.
“As part of our DC slate, some legacy development titles, including New Gods and The Trench, will not be moving forward. We thank our partners Ava DuVernay, Tom King, James Wan, and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration during this process and look forward to our continued partnership with them on other DC stories. The projects would remain in their skillful hands if they were to move forward in the future.” as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Director Ava DuVernay, despite DC’s decision to move she celebrated the work of her with her partner Tom King.
Tom, I loved writing NEW GODS with you. I’m upset that the saga of Barda, Scott, Granny, Highfather and The Furies ends this way. Diving into Kirby’s Fourth World was the adventure of a lifetime. That can’t be taken away. Thank you for your friendship. And remember… #DarkseidIs pic.twitter.com/XyyIjcB8Wv

Interestingly both The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline have mentioned different reasons as to why the movies have been called off. New Gods has been stopped because Darkseid has just appeared in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, says THR. While Deadline says the New Gods story went beyond the standalone structure of Warner Bros, while coming to the Trench, the movie has no connections to the Aquaman or the rest of the DCEU. And Deadline says this is because of James Wan’s busy schedule in working for the Aquaman 2.
Whatever might be the reason these movies won’t be seen on the large screen.
