After the most tragic event occurred at the Academy Awards 2022 ceremony, the board officially banned Will Smith for a decade. Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on the Academy stage and used inappropriate words after returning to his seat. Of course, he has his reasons for his anger, as Chris Rock commented on Will’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, implying her condition. However, after reviewing his reaction to that during the ceremony, the Academy Board decided to Ban him officially.

The Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences has announced that Will Smith will be banned from all Academy events, including the Oscars, for 10 years.

According to Variety, the Board of Governors met Friday morning to discuss the consequences for Smith after the actor slapped presenter Chris Rock on stage during the Academy Awards 2022. And it appears that the board voted to ban Will Smith from Oscars for 10 Years.

“The 94th Oscars were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who did incredible work this past year; however, those moments were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behavior we saw Mr. Smith exhibit on stage,” the Academy said in a statement. “The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.”

The Academy also thanked Chris Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances.

“This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s behavior is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests and restoring trust in the Academy. We also hope this can begin a time of healing and restoration for all involved and impacted,” the Academy said in a statement.

Will Smith replied to the Academy’s decision in a short statement: “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.”

The Academy didn’t announce any plans to cancel the nomination or the Oscar Will Smith won during that event. So although the Academy banned Will Smith, he still gets to keep the Oscar he won as Best Actor.
