Spotify has got the patent to this new tech, which will recommend songs to users. This new tech analyses the voice of the user and suggests them a song. Spotify has applied for this patent in 2018 and was granted by United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) this year. This new patent outlines tech that will identify the user’s emotional state based on the voice. This kind of stuff is not new for Spotify as they had another patent that involves curating Spotify playlist based on their personality traits.
The patent has a title, “Identification of taste attributes from an audio signal,” that describes how they process the audio input from users. The audio input includes the voice of the users and also the background noise. The Swedish company also mentions that it is common for a media streaming company to recommend songs based on the user’s taste. This is like a general approach to how we suggest songs by knowing the user’s age or gender.
The patent pushes this by using voice recognization technology to collect the taste and attributes of the users. This new patent technology aims at “intonation, stress, rhythm, and likes of the unit of speech”. They then combine it with the “acoustic information within a hidden Markov model architecture”. Then Spotify will categorize the user’s mood as “happy, angry, sad, or neutral”.
Spotify has analyzed users’ emotional state, age, gender, and accent of the speaker. The metadata will also include the number of people in the environment from the audio input. All of this metadata has been collected from the Spotify user’s previous requests, listening, and the rating history. The data also contains links to the associated profiles such as friends or colleagues. It will also take the existing music collection and library.
Spotify is known for its algorithms that suggest new audio content for the users. This is no surprise as the outcome of this new tech is to be seen when it comes to the users.
A small note to the users as patents may not be a concept in the market. As they take this move towards the new tech some times only can have a concept.
