Amazon the American MNC is planning to take over Spotify in podcasts by buying Wondery. Well, Wondery is known well for crime podcasts. Amazon Music will be having the Wondery library accessible to its prime members. Both the companies had a post regarding this bringing speculations to the end. Apple and Sony also were reported to have plans and had a discussion.
There was no mention of acquisition price by Amazon anywhere. But earlier reports by Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal suggests the value of Wandery to be $300 million. According to The Wall Street Journal reporter Ben Mullin, the current CEO of Wandery will leave the company as soon as the deal is done. The COO Jen Sargent will be taking over that place once it becomes part of Amazon Music.
This acquisition is a great buy for Amazon as it would put competition for Spotify. On the Other hand, Spotify was looking for exclusive talents and acquiring networks for over a year. For Amazon buying Wandery won’t put them ahead in the race but would help more accelerate the growth and evolution of podcasts.
Amazon would definitely be promoting Wandery shows globally over other shows and even put more money in marketing for it. Amazon doesn’t mention anything about Audible which is its own company. Audible already does have many exclusive podcasts and also public ones. Recently they introduced a lower price for specific people who are willing to listen to Audible exclusives.
Some of the top podcasts in Wondery are Dirty John, Dr. Death, Business Wars, and The Shrink Next Door.
