Facebook is planning to change its name in the next week. The decision to rebrand its name is to reflect its focus on creating a metaverse. On the occasion of the annual connect on October 28th, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will announce the name. The rebrand might even be sooner than the annual connect, according to the sources The Verge.
The only reason behind the rebranding of Facebook is the ambition of Zuckerberg to be more than a social media. This rebrand might become a parent company that will have Facebook as part of its social apps. This will push Facebook to be equal with Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus. At present, more than 10,000 employees are working on developing AR and VR products from Facebook. The major project that Facebook is working on at present is the AR (Augmented Reality) glasses. Zuckerberg thinks that this will be replacing smartphones in the future and strongly believes in that. An interview with The Verge regarding the metaverse also mentioned that they would transfer from a social media platform to a metaverse company.
If you have no idea what a metaverse then to put it in simple words, it is an imaginary world that looks almost like a real world. This is achieved by using Augmented Reality or Virtual Reality. Facebook has already released its first version of glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban. Though these smart glasses won’t have any AR or VR features, Facebook took a step in the direction it is planning.
The rebrand of Facebook might also be a positive approach to the current situation it is present. There are many lawsuits filed against the working of Facebook.
