Google is looking to improve its Play Store to distribute its apps in a better way. It has announced its plan that replaces the present APK with ABB (Android App Bundle) which isn’t a new format. The ABB (Android App Bundle) package is an alternative app packing format. Google aims to solve major issues of the APK and reduces the size by 15%. The applications in the new package will be coming from August this year.
This new packaging format aims mainly to reduce the size of Android Apps. This will also improve the speed of the downloads for the end-users. This new format will only apps to be 150MB in size for improved distribution. More than a million apps are using the APK bundle that was introduced back in 2018. From now on if apps or games having an app size of more than 150MB then developers need to use Play Asset Delivery(PAD). This new PAD will help to share external resources with the users. Until now companies have been using the OBBs to share the external assets with the users.
The new PAD will use faster data compression and dynamic strategies to enable faster download speed. This new format can even download data while you are playing or using the application. Introducing the new ABB format will bring a major catch for the developer. The new format will ABB cannot be shared on the third-party website as to how the present APKs. This new format can also be a problem to third-party stores like the Amazon App Store, Xiaomi Store, or the Oppo Store.
