We all at least once could have a song on our mind and try to remember the song’s name. Now Google has got this problem solved. It is really frustrating when we get to the tune and can’t remember the song’s name. This feature is called “Hum to Search” and starts to work from today in both Android or iOS devices and in Google Assistant.
We just have to ask “what is this song?” or the new keyword “Search a song” in the app and start humming the tune stuck in your mind. Google then shows songs that would match your hum and you can play and listen just like normal songs. This feature not only works with hum even you can try whistling or sing a melody.
So how does Google manage to get this done?
Google uses machine learning which turns the song into a number-based sequence that represents the song’s melody. The company has also trained to identify songs on a variety of sources that include humans singing, humming, as well as stereo recordings. The algorithm further removes all other details like instruments and vocal quality just to focus on the numeric sequence.
Google mentions “To keep this in easy words the song’s melody is like a fingerprint. And each song has its own unique identity. In this way when we hum or sing a melody it matches the fingerprint of the song by using their machine learning.”
The hum to search feature in Google should work constantly whether you are tune-deaf or don’t have perfect pitch. The new feature is available in English and 20 other languages with others adding soon.
