Instagram Reels, propelled by the growing fascination with short-form videos on social media platforms like TikTok, has experienced a surge in popularity. However, unlike TikTok, Instagram did not initially offer the ability to download these videos. That is until now.

In a recent announcement, Instagram’s CEO Adam Mosseri revealed that users can now download Instagram Reels on their mobile devices. However, this feature is currently limited to users in the United States. Additionally, downloading Reels is only possible on the mobile app, meaning web users will not have this capability. Furthermore, the download option is available exclusively for Reels from public accounts, not private ones. Moreover, users with public accounts have the freedom to choose whether or not their Reels can be downloaded.

The download process of Instagram Reels is quite simple. Users need to tap the Share icon for the desired Reel and select the Download option. The Reel will then be saved to their camera roll, complete with an Instagram watermark displaying the logo and the account’s name that posted it.

This functionality is reminiscent of TikTok’s approach, which allowed users to download and share videos on other platforms. The ability to download content contributed to TikTok’s immense popularity and propelled its growth. Instagram is now adopting a similar strategy, and it will be intriguing to observe the impact it has on the platform’s future.

Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has announced its intention to release a new app aimed at directly rivaling Twitter. This upcoming app will focus on text-based updates, allowing users to post similar content to tweets. Notably, the app will seamlessly integrate with users’ Instagram accounts, ensuring a smooth transfer of followers, account information, and privacy settings. The new app, potentially named ‘Threads,’ is anticipated to be launched within this month.
