A significant transformation in mobile connectivity within India has been brought about by Reliance Jio, initially with the introduction of 4G in 2015 and subsequently, the launch of True 5G in 2022. The rapid nationwide deployment of 5G connectivity has ensured a reliable and high-speed user experience. As a demonstration of their ongoing commitment, Jio has initiated the rollout of 26GHz mmWave 5G connectivity tailored for businesses in the country.
The introduction of a 5G-based 26GHz millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum for businesses across all 22 telecom circles has been announced by Jio. This step is aligned with the fulfillment of the minimum rollout obligation stipulated by the Department of Telecommunication (DoT). This follows the recent launch of a 5G-based 26GHz mmWave spectrum by Bharti Airtel. It has been mentioned in a press release that the telecom division of the company submitted the Phase 1 minimum rollout obligation details to the DoT on July 19, 2023.
MmWave technology, designed to enable both current and future 5G networks to achieve unparalleled speed and dependability, takes center stage in this Jio announcement. The distinctive approach by Jio combines low-band, mid-band, and mmWave spectrum, reinforced by indigenous technology and extensive fiber infrastructure. This unique amalgamation allows Jio to offer “5G Everywhere and 5G For All Consumers and Enterprises” characterized by low latency and high bandwidth. Furthermore, Jio asserts its possession of the largest spectrum footprint with 1,000MHz in the 26GHz mmWave band.
Akash Ambani, Chairman at Reliance Jio Infocomm, has expressed, “In line with our commitment to the Government of India, the Department of Telecommunications, and the 1.4 billion Indians for the rapid rollout of high-quality 5G services, we take pride in announcing India’s global leadership position in the expeditious deployment of 5G services. This ranks among the swiftest 5G rollouts of such magnitude globally, positioning India prominently on the global 5G map. The advantages of 5G mmWave encompass exceedingly high bandwidth and minimal latency.”
This move is expected to offer businesses in the country the advantage of enhanced connectivity. MmWave business solutions have the potential to amplify the market for leased lines, thereby digitizing numerous small and medium enterprises with dependable fixed-wireless services and business solutions. This spectrum supports ultra-high-speed broadband, reaching up to 2 Gbps.
In conclusion, Jio’s unveiling of a 5G-based 26GHz mmWave spectrum for businesses in India marks a significant stride in technological progression with potential benefits for businesses, digital transformation, economic growth, and the competitive landscape. The extent of impact hinges on effective implementation, coverage, and the willingness of businesses to integrate this advanced technology.
