All the OTT platforms including Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hotstar are now under government. This regulation also applies to social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. This regulation was signed by the president of India on Monday. All these will be governed by the Ministry of I&B.

This move on the OTT platforms gives more control to the government. Until recent times the OTT platform has no rules or any autonomous body to regulate them. Now with the new regulation, a private body will be viewing the content before it is aired on them. Last month, the Ministry of I&B has requested the Supreme court regarding the regulation of Social and digital media content. In recent times the reach of these has been increasing tremendously due to the present scenario.

What is OTT?

OTT means Over the Top these are the audio or video hosting and streaming services. Almost all the OTT have monthly or yearly subscriptions to access premium content. Some OTT also offers free content. All the content in the respective OTT platforms is generally produced and marketed by themselves. They gave freedom to all the filmmakers to show their talent without having any cuts or blurs. These contents as being reaching a huge number of audiences than the theater release most of them are showing interest to be part of it.

What are the new regulations?

These advantages made the creates to show all they want including adult content or violence or some cultural abuses. Now with the introduction of this rule puts a stop to all these activities. So it means that any web show or content going into the OTT must have a clearance before reaching the audience. This is something just like the CBFC certificate of the movies before releasing it in the theater.

This not only is going to stop all the abusive things on the internet but also challenges the makers. Until now they had the freedom to show whatever they want but now they have to follow some set of rules and regulations. These aren’t any harsh decision but a perfect decision as most of the countries do have a board that regulates the content being put on the OTT. This trend of OTT has just been late to India so did the law also.
