Netflix has expanded its crackdown on password sharing to more than 100 countries, including the United States. Users are now being alerted that sharing their accounts outside of their households for free is not allowed. The streaming giant is seeking new avenues for profit due to signs of market saturation. To achieve this, Netflix has implemented measures such as limiting password borrowing and introducing an ad-supported option.

In its recent move, Netflix has sent emails to customers in 103 countries and territories, including major markets like the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Mexico, and Brazil. These emails clearly state that a Netflix account should only be used within a single household. However, paying customers do have the option to add a member from outside their household for an extra fee. In the United States, this fee amounts to $8 per month.

To ensure convenience for users, Netflix allows the transfer of a person’s profile, preserving their viewing history and recommendations. This feature enables a smooth transition for users who wish to continue their personalized experience.

Netflix had already indicated its intentions to address account sharing and had been testing different approaches in select markets. The company estimates that over 100 million households have shared their login credentials with friends and family members outside their homes. As of March this year, Netflix reported a global customer base of 232.5 million paying subscribers.

Under the new policies, Netflix permits sharing within the same household and allows account access on multiple devices while traveling. This flexibility ensures that users can enjoy their favorite shows and movies without interruption, even when away from home.

In summary, Netflix’s recent initiative focuses on preventing password sharing outside of households. By implementing these measures, the company aims to boost revenue and counter market saturation. Paying customers can still share accounts within their households and conveniently access Netflix on various devices while traveling.
