YouTube, in an attempt to diversify its revenue sources, is reportedly considering online games, as per a recent report by the Wall Street Journal. According to an internal email obtained by the Journal, the video hosting platform has invited employees to test a new offering called Playables, allowing users to access online games directly on YouTube. The intriguing aspect is that these games can be played on various devices, including both mobile and desktop.

Users will have the option to play the games on the YouTube website via a web browser or through the app, whether they are using an Android or iOS phone. Although the report suggests that several games are currently available for testing, it only specifically mentions Stack Bounce. This ad-supported arcade game challenges players to demolish layers of bricks using a bouncing ball. By venturing into this new gaming territory, YouTube aims to generate additional revenue, especially in light of the decline in advertising spending.

While Google’s Stadia games streaming service struggled to gain traction and was eventually shut down, this foray into gaming presents a different approach. YouTube already boasts a massive audience that frequents the platform, so attracting attention to this new product shouldn’t be an issue. Playables appears to share similarities with Netflix’s gaming offering, which grants paying subscribers access to casual mobile games. Netflix, too, has ambitious plans for its gaming initiative and reportedly aims to expand beyond mobile devices. They are currently testing TV games that utilize smartphones as controllers.

By tapping into the popularity of online gaming, YouTube aims to tap into an additional revenue stream. With its established user base and the potential to captivate gamers, Playables could prove to be a lucrative endeavor for the video hosting platform. As the gaming industry continues to evolve and adapt, YouTube’s move into this space demonstrates its commitment to staying relevant and capitalizing on emerging trends.
