I remember the time when 4G came to India, a lot of people were still using the 3G compatible phones. It is almost the inverse of that condition; many people are buying 5G compatible phones even before it is available in India. The smartphone manufacturers have taken this opportunity and are bringing more 5G phones to India. Before we talk about smartphones with 5G, there is a lot that we need to know about 5G Technology.
As a tech enthusiast, I always want technology to improve year by year. 5G will be bringing a massive lot of improvements to the present-day tech life with more high-speed internet and ultra-low latency. There are always some questions at what cost are we welcoming the new 5G technology. We all know that everything always has some pros and cons. Nothing in this world is 100% ideal or will do good only. We should welcome things only if the cons don’t bother us.
Pros:
There are a lot of pros coming with the 5G technology being implemented. Not only in the industry-wise but in everyday life also. For example, we can download a Blueray or 4K movie within minutes or seconds (according to the ideal speed). We can have all the smart devices (IoT) in the home connected and communicating with each other with less latency. We can have an uninterrupted experience of AR/VR and much more. All these pros are tempting, but we should also talk about the negatives.
Cons:
The first con is the cost of the infrastructure. Some parts of the world have already got 5G working, but it will take more than two years for all of India to experience it. The frequency used in the 5G technology is significantly less, which means it can’t cover a large part of the area tower is installed. The network providers need to install a lot of cell towers to expand the network. As the number of towers gets increased the amount of radiation, every human being is exposed to will be increased. The initial data plans of the 5G will also be high.
So after knowing the last point of the con, one question comes to my mind. Do we really need that speed? Am I not ok with the current speed? I have even asked the same questions to some of my friends and have got some mixed replies.
Verdict:
When we consider only India, then I would say yes, it requires speed as the country’s population is very high. Hence it leads to more internet users, which decreases the bandwidth of the internet offered by the network provider. The present scenario is that there are still places in India that still can’t feel the speed of 4G. Maybe after 5G starts to show up in the metropolitan cities, those areas can get the 4G speed. But implementing 5G will be costlier than expanding the 4G network to those areas. We need to see how the telecoms handle the situation after getting the permissions to launch 5G in India.
I wonder why companies are rushing the tech that fast with no use of having a 5G phone in India. Some phones have only one band support present in the phones, like the OnePlus phones. What happens if we get bands other than the ones offered by the company? We should buy another 5G supported phone as we have no other option.
