OnePlus 9 Series has been released on March 23rd; the phone has been in the news for months before launch. This much hype on the phone was because OnePlus announced its partnership with Hasselblad. Hasselblad is a Swedish camera company that is making premium cameras for 180 years. The camera from this brand is the one used to take a picture of the Moon and Earth from the Moon. The company is well known for its color accuracy. OnePlus has three years of collaboration to improve its camera quality.
The first phone that came in this collaboration is the OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9. When we say collaboration, it doesn’t mean just putting a name on the phone’s camera module. It means that the company is involved in work to improve the performance of the camera. If we talk about what Hasselblad’s role was in the OnePlus 9 series. The answer is simple to make sure the colors are accurate when you take a picture in the OnePlus 9 series. This means that the company has nothing to do with the lens selection.
One of the biggest highlights of the OnePlus 9 series cam is the ultrawide-angle sensor. The pictures from the ultrawide-angle sensors are best when compared to others. But the reason for this is because of the sensor that OnePlus is using. The Ultrawide angle sensor is a Sony IMX766 with a freeform lens that decreases the distortion in the edges. The sensors already do the main work to be done here. Then is the collaboration that much worth only for color correction.
Well, the answer is no, but there are rumors that both OnePlus and Hasselblad are working to make a special sensor. If that’s true, then we can see a lot of improvement in the camera performance. I am not saying that the camera performance in the OnePlus 9 pro or the OnePlus 9 is the worst; they are good but not the best. For all the hype that they have built on this phone camera, I just expected a lot more from them.
If you observe during the launch, OnePlus mentions using the brand ambassadors from Hasselblad. This means this involvement of Hasselblad in the camera of OnePlus is likely to be near 10% or maybe 20%. When a company invests money in collaboration, it should give the company some freedom to do its best. If I have to pick the best collaboration for smartphone cameras is Huawei and Leica. Huawei gives Leica the liberty to select the lens they need to keep on the smartphone to get the best pictures. That is the type of collaboration I am waiting to see from OnePlus and Hasselblad.
