Samsung and AMD have been working together for the past year on developing the Exynos SoC. AMD has been helping Samsung to accelerate graphics innovation in the mobile platform. Now AMD is bringing its RDNA 2 architecture to the next Exynos Chip that will also support ray tracing. The announcement was made at the Computex 2021 virtual event. During this event, they didn’t provide much information about the chip. Samsung said it would announce the SoC later this year.
During the announcement, AMD’s CEO mentions they will be bringing custom graphics IP(Intellectual Property) to the Samsung SoC. These will be mainly available in the flagship phones using Samsung’s next-gen Exynos SoC. This will be the first time AMD will be coming to mobile phones. Using the RDNA 2 architecture provides access to new features in mobile gaming like ray tracing and variable rate shading. RDNA 2 is the architecture used in the latest AMD RX 6000 series GPUs, if you are not aware.
With this move, the Samsung Exynos chipset will offer a boost in gaming performance and graphics processing. Samsung has a little negative to gaming when compared to its rival Snapdragon. So AMD might now bring up the game for Samsung chipset in the gaming department.
In general, the Samsung Exynos chipset is primarily present in its mobiles except for the USA. Surprisingly last year Samsung in their home country has opted for Snapdragon SoC over their own Exynos in Samsung S20. Well, is AMD going to bring a competitor for Qualcomm’s Adreno GPU is still a question. But by the words of using RDNA 2 and ray tracing is getting the hype.
