Elon Musk has brought pig named Gertrude with a large coin-sized brain-computer tech device Neuralink in her brain to demonstrate his working brain-machine concept.
“It’s kind of like a Fitbit in your skull with tiny wires”
– Elon Musk on a webcast.
Neuralink has raised around $158 million in last year in that $100 million is from Elon Musk. He’s very ambitious in the plan and his start-up applied to launch human trails last year. This chip inside brain can allow humans with neurological conditions to control phones and computers with their brain.
Musk said Neuralink can also help fight conditions like insomnia, dementia, memory loss, blindness, paralysis, spinal cord injuries and focusing on even more. On Friday (28th of August), Musk brought a pig named Gertrude with a Neuralink mounted in her brain to show neurons firing in real-time.
The new device now is minimized from the device shown in last year. This device consists of tiny probe containing more than 3,000 electrodes attached to flexible threads that are thinner than a human hair, these can monitor 1,000 brain neurons activity.
Installing this device in humans will replace a small portion of human skull as device is of a large coin-sized. There is no need of general anesthesia, he hopes a robot will do the entire surgery within an hour. After installing it, people left with a little scar on their head after mounting all the electrodes. If surgery done well, there will be no blood.
The new prototype device called Link V0.9 have 1024 channels. It’s 23mm x 8mm so that it can perfectly fit into a skull replacing a small portion of skull which is 10mm thick. It can do a lot functions like monitoring your health, streaming music from inside the head. It has an all day battery and can be inductively charged while sleeping.
These were what shown in the demonstration by the ambitious entrepreneur Elon Musk. Neuralink, founded in 2017 and actively searching for scientists and this demonstration was nothing but for the same purpose. It unveiled the new future goals and technology that takes the world. Elon Musk really is a real world Tony Stark. Still some Medical Research professors talking about the brain complexity and safety concerns of such tech implantation. Let’s wait for next prototype or demonstration and hope it resolves the current problems.
