Facebook announces to launch smart glasses with Ray-Ban

Facebook is mainly referred to as a social media website or application. On the other side, they are trying to expand in the hardware segment also. Mark, along with Facebook, believes that Augmented Reality will be taking on the world in the future. Oculus is one of the examples we can show on how into is Facebook in AR and VR. Now Mark has officially announced that Facebook, in collaboration with Ray-Ban, will be launching smart glasses.

In the earnings call this week, Mark has announced this information. He mentions, “Looking ahead here, the next product release will be the launch of our first smart glasses from Ray-Ban in partnership with EssilorLuxottica“. He also added that you could be able to do some pretty “neat things with the glasses.” We have a confirmation from the previous news that Facebook won’t be having an integrated display or involved in Augmented Reality for the smart glasses.

With that in mind, many questions are arising. What do the “neat things,” according to Mark, mean. Suppose it doesn’t have any integrated display, then what will be different from the regular glasses. These smart glasses from Facebook will be part of the journey towards full Augmented Reality glasses. There have been no words on when the launch of the product is going to happen.

The last update from the earnings call to take a note of is about the Ads. Mark mentioned that Ads would continue to be an essential part of the strategy across all the social media platforms. This might also be a part of the metaverse. Well, the metaverse is what Facebook is planning to build with Augmented Reality devices.
