The internal code name for this project is known as Project Iris. And Google is looking to launch it by 2024 the year when Apple is also looking to launch its AR headset. At present, the AR headset is still in development and early prototypes are being developed in San Fransico. Google is still not a strategy on making this product a go-to-market. This makes it not sure to release the product by 2024.
The design of the headset will be similar to that of Meta and Apple. The AR headset designed by Google will be powered by its own chipset like the newer Pixel phone. Google is also planning to design a unique OS for especially for the AR Headset. Google’s main advantage is the data centres and using that it is planning to remotely render graphics to the headsets. The headset will be connected to the internet for visual graphics. A team from Pixel is also working on the hardware development and this might also be named as Pixel AR headset.
An article from TheVerge covers a lot of information about this news. Where it also mentions the Project Starline an ultra-high-resolution video chat booth. They have mentioned that Google is planning to launch both projects simultaneously in the year 2024.
