Google is reportedly working on an AI-powered feature for its messaging service, Google Messages, that generates automatic responses. The current Smart Reply feature offers limited options, such as “Sounds great?” or “Thanks,” but the new feature would allow for more comprehensive responses. This news comes from a recent report by 9to5Google, which discovered a new feature during an APK teardown of the beta version of Google Messages.

The new feature, which is still in development, appears as a button with a sparkle icon within the composition box of the messaging app. This icon resembles the one used by Google Bard, it’s ChatGPT competitor. This suggests that Google may be working on incorporating AI-powered automatic responses into its messaging service.

If this feature proves to be true, it could change the way people communicate through messaging. The new AI-powered feature could offer users a faster and more efficient way of responding to messages. Additionally, the generated message is not sent automatically but is shown to the user within the composition box for review and editing before being sent.

The feature is still in the early stages of development, and using it results in the composition box displaying only “(TODO!).” This suggests that the feature is still being developed, and its full potential has yet to be realized. However, it is likely that the feature will be based on Google Bard or its underlying technology to fill in the field with a complete message automatically.

While the ongoing AI wars between tech giants are not mentioned in the report, it is clear that Google is actively working to improve its messaging service by incorporating AI-powered features. It remains to be seen when this feature will be fully developed and released to the public, but if successful, it could change the way we communicate through messaging apps.
