LG laptop seems to have a rollable laptop in the works that could offer as big as 17-inch display size. Over the past year, we have not only seen a variety of foldable phones but a handful of foldable laptop concepts surface as well. Technology giants are now looking past these foldable form factors and LG is no stranger to this concept. The South Korea based electronics major LG is already offering a high-end rollable TV and is speeding up to bring a rollable smartphone to the market next year. LG seems this as a step further, as the company has now patented a laptop with a rollable display.
This patent, titled ‘Portable electronic device having rollable display structure’, this patent was first spotted by RootMyGalaxy. From the patent images, the laptop can be used anywhere between 13.3-inch to 17-inch just by rolling it. The laptop when unrolled resembles a soundbar, which kind of looks interesting. Unlike the regular laptops, this LG laptop will have a power button on the right side.
In the first image, we can see the power button is on the right side of the display enclosure. There is no mention of the CPU and other hardware components in the patent. I believe it will be the former as the company will enable you to control the device using touch. But, you can attach a keyboard accessory for added precision.
If there is a worry that the display will tumble and fall over then LG, in the patent filing, explicitly mentions that the display has a self-standing guide unit. It “guides the rollable display panel into a curved arc shape so that the rollable display panel independently stands up when the rollable display is unrolled from a display drum inside a housing.”
