The foldable smartphones are still quite small in number but have a lot of companies working on them. Until now, we only have Samsung ruling the segment with Galaxy Fold 3 and Galaxy Flip 3. Apart from Samsung, we have Huawei, Royale, and even Motorola trying to show their presence in foldable smartphones. Other companies are looking to launch their foldable phone. OnePlus also is adding itself to the list. OnePlus has filed a new patent for a tri-folding dual-hinge phone.
This really does sound ridiculous, but it is true. The new patent from OnePlus shows that it is designing a phone that can fold two times on both sides. When the phone is unfolded, it does look like a rectangle (not sure what to do with that long screen with no width). LetsGoDigital was the first to report the design that OnePlus filed a year ago. The design does look unique, having three properly functioning sections that have hinges on two parts of the phone.
You can look at the picture below that shows the folding of the OnePlus tri-folding phone. LetsGoDigital also did some renders on how the device might look partnering with a concept artist. The phone will be thicker than the present foldable phones as it needs to fold two screens. The phone, when unfolded, looks a lot bigger, and I wonder what applications will be supporting the screen.
Since the patent was filed only recently, do not expect the OnePlus tri-folding phone anytime soon as it will take a lot of time for the company to get it into the consumer’s hands.
