Previously, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated their plans of investments in hardware and their roadmap ahead in 2021. The tech industry believed in confirmation that Google would be developing its own processors. And they are doing it with the codename “Whitechapel.” Thus, Google Pixel 6 may come out with Google’s own chip.
It was first rumored in 2020 that Google is creating its own systems on a chip (SoCs) to be used in future Pixel phones and Chromebooks. The effort of “Whitechapel” is similar to Apple using its own silicon in the iPhone and Mac. Reportedly, Google is working on its own processors in collaboration with Samsung. Qualcomm is like a global leader in the smartphone chipset industry, making Snapdragon processors. Samsung, with their Exynos chipset, is Qualcomm’s major rival. So it is no surprise that Google shares the collaboration with Samsung in chip making.
According to 9to5Google, these new Google-made chipsets will arrive as soon as 2021. As they read the documentation, it states that Google’s Whitechapel platform will indeed power this fall’s Pixel phones. And as they develop with Samsung Semiconductor’s system large-scale integration (SLSI) division, the chipset may share the design and architecture similarities with Samsung Exynos, including software components.
What Google gains?
Above all, Google products like Pixel, Chromebook, and other tech being powered by their own silicon could help Google in building their own eco-system. Google has its own Smartphones, Notebook PCs, TWS, and also it bought the smartwatch firm Fitbit recently. So building its own silicon could reduce their manufacturing costs and also removes more boundaries achieving cross-platform. And that completes Google’s eco-system design. So all being considered, this could be Google’s biggest leap if all the plans go as expected.
Putting it all together, Google will bring the next Pixel phones this fall, and they will not be powered by Qualcomm. Instead, they will bring the Google Pixel 6 phones powered by their own chip built on Google’s own Whitechapel hardware platform, in association with Samsung.
