It can be called as the Snapdragon 865 plus plus

Qualcomm launches Snapdragon 870 as an improvement to Snapdragon 865

Qualcomm has announced a new mobile processor Snapdragon 870. This will be a successor to the Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 865 Plus. It isn’t a next-gen design as it is the Snapdragon 888, but it is just some improvement to the old flagships.

Qualcomm might have thrown us into confusion with this release as Snapdragon 888 is supposed to be a next-gen new design flagship processor. Snapdragon 888 will also bring in performance improvements and new features. Snapdragon 870, on the other hand, is just identical to the Snapdragon 865 and 865 plus. It still has the same Kyro 585 CPU with Adreno 650 GPU cores. The 870 has a clock speed of 3.2GHz, which is 10 percent faster than the 865 with 2.8GHz. It is just 3 percent faster than the 865 plus, which had a 3.1GHz clock speed.

Qualcomm explains the idea of manufacturing this chip is for market demands. The new Snapdragon 870 is designed for smartphone companies that want to give flagship-like features but not the whole Snapdragon 888 experience. The Snapdragon 888 also does have a high price tag to it with the elements. So it expects companies to use this chipset in the midrange segment to give a flagship like processing power at a lower price.

When we observe this in the marketing aspect, the companies can name it as the “new” 2021 chip to boast. This grabs more weight on the specs sheet rather than the one year older 865 or 865 plus. It seems to be like a Snapdragon 865 plus plus rather than Snapdragon 870. According to the companies, this lineup might make them closer to more customers. This lineup will provide top-tier processing at affordable prices rather than having a one-year-old processor.

Qualcomm mentions the first phones to be having Snapdragon 870 will be available from Q1 of 2021. It also says some of the companies that will have the chip include Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, and Xiaomi.
