Tinder, the well-known online dating app, will make the ID Verification option available for all members globally.
Tinder on Monday posted an official article stating that it will add an ID Verification feature to all the users around the world “in the coming quarters.”
This feature has already been live in Japan since 2019. The ID Verification will allow users to verify their identities by uploading documentation. In Japan, a passport or license is typically used to verify Tinder profiles. As it’s going global now, the requirements might be different based on the user geo-location. It may vary from place to place.
The company said that it will consider expert recommendations and input from members of Tinder regarding what documents are most appropriate in each country and local laws and regulations during its feature rollout.
Rory Kozoll, Head of Trust & Safety Product at Tinder, said that the company is taking a “test-and-learn” approach as the ID verification launch is complex. “We know one of the most valuable things Tinder can do to make members feel safe is to give them more confidence that their matches are authentic and more control over who they interact with,” Kozoll added.

Is Tinder ID Verification mandatory for all?
Initially, the ID Verification will be voluntary in all the regions except if this is mandatory as per local law. Tinder also considers that people don’t want to share their identities online and acknowledges them.
“We know that in many parts of the world and within traditionally marginalized communities, people might have compelling reasons that they can’t or don’t want to share their real-world identity with an online platform,” said Tracey Breeden, VP of Safety and Social Advocacy at Match Group. “Creating a truly equitable solution for ID Verification is a challenging but critical safety project, and we are looking to our communities as well as experts to help inform our approach.”
Safety at Tinder
Tinder is continuously adding safety features to its application. Previously, Tinder added a user photo verification feature, and whoever verified it got a blue check on their dating profiles. And recently, in March, Tinder’s parent company announced an investment in Garbo, a background check firm. They also said it would bring the technology to Tinder users.
